Beer of the Week: Sam Adams Utopias

Posted on May 24th, 2011

Overview: Sam Adams Utopias might be one of the most hyped products in the craft beer industry. Released on odd years since 2001 as a follow up to Sam Adams Millennium, this beer holds the title of one of the strongest naturally brewed beer in the world, coming in at about 27% ABV. This beer uses yeasts typical for champagne and wine, maple syrup, and for this year’s batch, the brew was aged in a variety of sherry and port casks. The bottle is handcrafted out of ceramic and individually numbered. You also get a redeem code for a free (plus shipping and handling) handmade glassware especially made for this beer. Only 53 barrels were used for this year’s batch, and many stores are already out of their supply, even though there was no major announcement when it became available. Did I mention that it’ll cost you $150, or often more?

Samuel Adams Latitude 48 IPA

About the beer:

Released in early 2010, the Sam Adams Latitude 48 IPA is a unique IPA brewed with a blend of hops from German, English, and American growing regions located close to the 48th latitude, widely considered the the “hop belt” of the Northern Hemisphere. While the Sam Adams gang has tip-toed around the American IPA style, this new release by the brewery, who have previously only brewed one other now-discontinued IPA, jumps right into the conversation with a 6% ABV and hoppy authority. Originally available in the 2010 Sam Adams summer styles mix pack, the Latitude 48 IPA now comes in six pack and draft offerings where available.

Beer of the Week: Sam Adams Stony Brook Red

Posted on February 1st, 2011

About the Beer:

It’s a difficult task attempting to place the  Sam Adams within the American beer culture. As far as craft brewers go, one would be hard-pressed to deny their influence on America’s beer economy. In stark comparison to the American Macro-brewing industry, Sam Adams has remained an independent force providing a fine selection of brew over the past three decades. One of the most intriguing series of brews of late to come from the Boston Beer Company’s first home in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, is their trio of brews known as, “The Barrel Room Collection“. The most stellar of which is the Stony Brook Red. All three beers are meant to represent Sam Adams’ take on several Belgian style brews.
