Beer of the Week: The People’s Pint Slippery Slope

About the beer: Longtime readers of Beeriety will recall that recently a friend and I brewed up a very unique style of beer called a braggot (pronounced “bracket”). This style of beer, which has its origins as a mead, comes from Wales, but is associated with the United Kingdom at large, as there are multiple takes on this ancient recipe across the British Isles. I had never tried a braggot before brewing one, and seldom thought I would ever get the chance. Imagine my surprise when perusing my new favorite craft beer store, the Craft Beer Cellar in Belmont, MA, I came upon the “Slippery Slope” by The People’s Pint, a small brewery located in Greenfield, MA.

The Cranberry Lifecycle

As we all know by now the secret to a good winter  is a beer with more robust flavors, aged notes, and plenty of ABV to keep us feeling warm. So in keeping with the winter spirit, my roommate and I decided to brew up something unique and sweet for the coming winter storm.  Straight out of the book “Extreme Brewing” by Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head fame, we attempted to brew the “Crandaddy Braggot”, which, if you can’t deduce from the title, is a braggot.

An Introduction to Mead

Although beer is our main focus here at Beeriety, we sometimes like to profile related fields that are also popular among craft beer enthusiasts. Humans have been drinking mead for a long, long time. In fact, its thought to be the first type of alcohol ever produced, dating back all the way to 7000 BCE. The Romans drank mead, the Vikings drank mead and people today still drink mead, although in much smaller numbers. Since the mid-1990’s there has been a growing interest in the beverage and more great mead makers are cropping up with each passing year. Although it can be tough to find in some parts of the US, the unique variety of flavors possible with mead makes it worth seeking out.
